SUNDAY 9TH DECEMBER-SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Let salvation visible to all.us prepare the way of the Lord.  With simple lives and humble hearts, let us make God’s

THE COLLECT

O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us,

and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us, your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 738/740)

First Reading                                        Malachi 3:1-4

The Lord is coming to purify the priestly tribe of Levites so God will be in his temple again; through the coming of Christ we are all purified so the Lord may dwell in us.

Second Reading                           Philippians 1:3-11

Confident that God will bless his Philippian friends with an ever-deepening faith, Paul prays that their love will grow in understanding.

Gospel                                             St. Luke 3:1-6

Foreseen by Isaiah, John is the forerunner coming out of the hilly Judean wilderness and challenging people to prepare a straight, level road for the Lord to arrive on.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Father in heaven, who sent your Son to redeem the world

and will send him again to be our judge:

give us grace so to imitate him in the humility and purity of his first coming

that, when he comes again, we may be ready to greet him with joyful love and firm faith, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

THE ADVENT RING CEREMONY

Said together:

We have this Advent Ring to remind us of the Coming of Jesus, the Light of the World.

SING:            The holly and the ivy,

Are dancing in a ring,

Round the coloured Advent candles

And the shining Christmas King.

Said together: (as the second candle is lit)

We light this candle to help us think of God’s greatest promise, first told by the prophets.

SING:            O, two is for the prophets

and for the light they bring.

They are candles in the darkness,

all alight for Christ the King.

INTRODUCTION

Come before the Lord with thanksgiving, for Jesus Christ has opened for us a new and living way into the presence of God.

COLLECT FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY BEFORE ADVENT

Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us children of God and heirs to eternal life:

grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure;

that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

THE READINGS

First Reading                           Daniel 12:1-3

Daniel prophesies that great tribulation before the end of time will bring the resurrection of the dead, judgement and the deliverance of God’s people.

Second Reading                                Hebrews 10:11-14, 19-25

Because Jesus has offered a perfect sacrifice for our sins, we can approach God’s judgement day with confidence in his promise of forgiveness.

Gospel                                            St. Mark 13:1-8

The destruction of the Temple, heart of Jewish culture, is one of many catastrophes to precede the end of time, none in themselves signalling the end.

 POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Gracious Lord, in this holy sacrament you give substance to our hope:
bring us at the last to that fullness of life for which we long;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.  Amen.
