 “Weekly News” for

 THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

 21st  SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 24)

SUNDAY OCTOBER 21st 2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Today Jesus tells his disciples that if they want to become great they must be servants of each other. Jesus came not to be served but to serve and to give his life for our salvation.

COLLECT FOR THE 21st  SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord,

to your faithful people pardon and peace.

That they may be cleansed from all their sins

and serve you with a quiet mind;

Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

READINGS FOR TODAY  – Proper 24 (Page 698/700)

First Reading                     Isaiah 53: 4-12

The prophet Isaiah tells of a righteous servant of God who, through his suffering, will make others righteous and will intercede for sinners.

Second Reading                Hebrews 5: 1-10

Jesus, although sinless, was called to become a high priest and through his suffering and obedience he becomes the source of salvation for all.

Gospel                                  St. Mark 10: 35-45

Jesus once again tries to teach his disciples that the way to glory, to God’s kingdom, is through service to others even at the cost of great suffering, and that the glory of the Kingdom cannot be earned or deserved, it is given through God’s grace.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Father of light, in whom is no change of shadow of turning, you give the gift and have brought us to birth by your word of truth:

May we be a living sign of your kingdom where your whole creation will be made perfect in Jesus Christ our Lord.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16th 2018

INTRODUCTION

In this Eucharist we come together to listen and learn again the nature of God, not to tell Him what we want but to receive what He offers us.

COLLECT FOR THE 16th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

O Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers
of your people who call upon you;
and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS FOR TODAY – Proper 19                 (Lectionary Page 671/673)

The prophet knows that he really is teaching what he has learned from God, even though everyone around him despises and disregards him.

This is a solemn warning about the dangers of careless and unkind speech. Anyone who talks, whether to teach or to gossip, will be held responsible for the outcome of their words.

15th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 18)

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9th  2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

In his ministry Jesus displays love and compassion. We who have put our faith in him must try and follow that example as we receive his pardon and peace.

THE COLLECT

God, who in generous mercy sent the Holy Spirit

upon your Church in the burning fire of your love:
grant that your people may be fervent in the fellowship of the gospel
that, always abiding in you,
they may be found steadfast in faith and active in service;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
  Amen

THE READINGS   (Lectionary Page 665/666)

First Reading                      Isaiah 35:4-7a

As God will punish the wicked, so he will reward his chosen. His reign will bring blessings of plenty, of joy and health.

Second Reading              James 2:1-10, 14-17

Readings from the letter of James relate our faith to how we behave. If we claim to be Christians our faith should be demonstrated in the way we treat others – especially the poor.

Gospel                                   St. Mark 7:24-37

Mark’s Gospel turns to a new phase of Jesus’ ministry – his going to Gentiles. We find this perfectly natural, but the difficulties it posed for the Jews of the early Church are evident in this story.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Keep, O Lord, your Church, with your perpetual mercy; and, because without you our human frailty cannot but fall, keep us ever by your help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

14th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 17)

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2ND 2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

As we come to this Eucharist may our hearts be full of love. Let us rejoice in the God who created us and redeemed us.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, whose only Son has opened for us
a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 660/661 – Proper 17)

First Reading                                     Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9

Moses calls on the Israelites to respond to God’s love by obeying his commandments: this mutual relationship will bring them to the Promised Land.

Second Reading                             James 1:17-end

God’s call is to obey the fundamental law.  A living relationship with God delivers us from the slavery of sin. We put this into practice by helping others.

Gospel                                               St. Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When they censure his disciples for neglecting rituals, Jesus reminds the Pharisees of the basis of God’s law: to honour him with our hearts.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord God, the source of truth and love,
keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
united in prayer and the breaking of bread,
and one in joy and simplicity of heart, in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

In this Eucharist, we gather in faith to be nourished and renewed by the presence of the living Lord as we receive the sacrament in his name.

THE COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God,

you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation

of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 649/650)

First Reading                         Proverbs 9:1-6

Wisdom calls those who are simple in heart to follow her and walk in the way of insight that leads to fullness of life.

Second Reading                                   Ephesians 5:15-20

The writer cautions his readers to live wisely, and “understand what the will of the Lord is”. He encourages them to give thanks to God for all his gifts.

Gospel                                   St. John 6:51-58

Jesus claims to be the living “bread that came down from heaven”. He promises the gift of eternal life to all who “eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood”.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

God of all mercy, in this Eucharist you have set aside our sins and given us your healing: grant that we who are made whole in Christ may bring that healing to this broken world,  in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus Christ has the words of eternal life. We believe and know that he is the Holy One of God.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:

and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

SUNDAY AUGUST 12TH   2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus offers himself to us as the bread of life, spiritual food.  In our worship let us feed on him, so that he may fill our very being with his love and his life.

THE COLLECT

O God, you declare your almighty power
most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace,
that we, running the way of your commandments,
may receive your gracious promises,
and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 644/646 – Proper 14)

First Reading                                           1 Kings 19:4-8

Elijah flees from his enemies into the wilderness.  Exhausted in body and mind, he tells God he can go no further.  God supplies the rest and food so he can continue.

Second Reading                      Ephesians 4:25–5:2

Paul gives the Ephesian Christians practical examples of how they should live together.  He sums up by encouraging them to imitate Christ’s sacrificial love.

Gospel                                                   John 6:35, 41-51

Jesus declares that he is the bread of life.  His enemies question his authority to make such bold claims, but Jesus asserts that those who feed on him through faith will receive eternal life.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord of all mercy, we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace:  By our communion keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us from all sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
