  “Weekly News” for

  THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

Sunday April 22nd – FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

A WARM WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS TODAY

Introduction and call to worship

Jesus is the Good Shepherd who cares for his people. He is our protector and our guide today. The risen Christ is with us – to guide us in our worship and to lift us to safety when we fall.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life:
Raise us, who trust in him,
from the death of sin to the life of righteousness,
that we may seek those things which are above,
where he reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

THE READINGS FOR TODAY (Page 544/545)

First Reading                                     Acts 4:5-12

Peter, who had denied Jesus at the time of his trial, has been restored. Now he has a new found faith and courage to proclaim Jesus as Messiah.

Second reading                                 1 John 3:16-24

As the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep, so followers of Christ are told to care for the lost, and to love one another in word and deed.

Gospel                                               St. John 10:11-18

The relationship that Jesus has with us is like that of a good shepherd with his sheep. He is with us in danger. He cares for the lost. His will is that we should be one. He lays down his life for us.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Father, you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd,
and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again:
Keep us always under his protection, and give us grace to follow in his steps; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

INTRODUCTION

The Greeks said, “We wish to see Jesus”. We look again at our Christian faith so that we may see in our lives the presence of the crucified and risen Christ.

THE COLLECT

Most merciful God,

who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ
delivered and saved the world:
grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross
we may triumph in the power of his victory;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 474/476)

First Reading                                                        Jeremiah 31: 31-34

God promises a new covenant with his chosen people, written on their hearts. “I will be their God, and they shall be my people”.

Second Reading                                                Hebrews 5: 5-10

Christ is the new High Priest who offers himself on behalf of all his people, and through his suffering, wins for them eternal salvation.

Gospel                                                                  St. John 12: 20-33

The arrival of some Greeks at the Passover festival prompts Jesus to teach his disciples about his impending death and resurrection.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you:  Give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us,
but are alive and reign, now and for ever.  Amen

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

Sunday March 4th 2018 – THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

A warm welcome to any visitors with us today

Introduction and call to worship

Let us worship the one true God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have been rescued from slavery to sin.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God,

whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain,
and entered not into glory before he was crucified:
Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,
may find it none other than the way of life and peace;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                      Exodus 20:1-17

God’s commandments explain how we should treat him and each other if we wish to live a life that is blessed.

Second Reading                  1 Corinthians 1:18-25

People who seek salvation in a show of strength or wisdom find it hard to believe in a crucified Saviour.

Gospel                                St. John 2:13-22

Jesus, the incarnate demonstration of God’s way, is shocked to find the Temple in Jerusalem demonstrating the way of greed and exploitation.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations

of the world, the flesh and the devil,
and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

February 25th 2018 – SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

A warm welcome to any visitors with us today

INTRODUCTION

As we make our pilgrimage through Lent, towards Easter, we are journeying towards the completion of the Covenant, which God made with his people through Jesus. Let us celebrate with gratitude God’s goodness and faithfulness to all his people.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth,
that they may return to the way of righteousness:
Grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion,
that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession,
and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same;
through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGSPage 461/462

First Reading                                      Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16

To leave everything that is familiar and to go where the Lord leads takes courage and unshakeable faith in the promise which is given and in the reward offered.

Second Reading                                Romans 4:13-25

There is no law which can make anyone believe. True faith comes from a certainty planted within us by God, then owned, acknowledged and lived by its recipient.

Gospel                                                 Mark 8:31-38

Sometimes we reject a difficult message when it involves someone for whom we care, like Peter with Jesus. Discipleship put our faith to the test every day of our lives.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Almighty God, you see that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves:  Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls;  that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body,
and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

January 28th 2018 – FOURTH SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY

A warm welcome to any visitors with us today

INTRODUCTION

In this season of Epiphany, we are invited to look at the ways in which Jesus reveals his Divine nature. Today we hear of the authority of Jesus as he commands the unclean spirit to come out of the man possessed.

THE COLLECT

God our creator,

who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness:

we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ

may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief,

shine into the hearts of all your people,

and reveal the knowledge of your glory

in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                 Deuteronomy 18:15-20

The Old Testament promise of a prophet sent from God, which the Apostles found fulfilled in Christ.

Second Reading                            Revelation 12:1-5a

The vision of St. John the Divine continues with the sight of “a woman clothed with the sun.  She gave birth to a child who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron”.

Gospel                                           St. Mark 1:21-28

The authority of Jesus is without question. The man with the unclean spirit was healed when Jesus drove it.  “He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him”.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Generous Lord, in word and Eucharist we have proclaimed the mystery of your love:  Help us so to live out our days that we may be signs of your wonders in the world; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen

ST. MERRYN A Treasurer /Book-keeper is required for St. Merryn Church. Can anyone help? Please contact Phil Gorse 520544 or Moira Gill 520418 for further details.
