February 12th 2017 – THIRD SUNDAY BEFORE LENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

The Mosaic Law gave us the 10 commandments. Jesus gives his explanation of how to live.  He gives us our “Rule of Life”

 THE COLLECT

Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity:  Give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                    Deuteronomy 30: 15 – end

God gives the way to live so that the Jewish people will be blessed by the Lord their God – the Way of life. The alternative is the way of death.

Second Reading                                1 Corinthians 3: 1-9

Paul rebukes party-spirit in the church; for it has only one foundation, Jesus Christ himself.

 Gospel                                                St. Matthew 5: 21 – 37

Jesus continues the “Sermon on the Mount”, teaching the inner meaning of the Ten Commandments

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Father, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life, that those who come to him should never hunger:

Draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU – Heartiest congratulations and a massive thank you to Sue Norfolk and Linda Morey for masterminding two events for us.

Over the past 2 weeks they have raised £2,089.96 for the Coracle Appeal with the Christmas Craft Fair in the Church rooms on November 26th and the amazing Crib and Quilt Exhibition in St. Petroc’s from the 1st to the 4th December.  The Craft Fair raised £300 and the Crib and Quilt Exhibition raised £1789.96 which included the collection at the closing service on Sunday.    The idea of having quilts as well as 127 cribs – yes 127 – was inspired.  It gave the exhibition a whole new feel  – a feeling of warmth and colour as the quilts were draped amongst the cribs.  Sue and Linda have spent hours and hours in church preparing, stewarding and dismantling the exhibition and the outreach from the two events has, once again, been amazing as we have received some very kind and complimentary comments about keeping the true meaning of Christmas alive..      Thanks to everyone who helped in any way – by loaning cribs, stewarding and serving and donating refreshments.  There is a lovely piece on the Diocesan Website with some great photos which all helps to keep St. Petroc’s on the map.  A special thank you to Sue and Linda our VERY hard working churchwardens.    Fr. Chris.

 THE COLLECT

O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us,

and with great might succour us;

that whereas, through our sins and wickedness

we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

be honour and glory, now and for ever.  Amen

Newsletter – 27 November 2016

“Weekly News” for the Parishes of Padstow,

St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

November 27th 2016 – FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

On this Advent Sunday, we rejoice in God’s promise of salvation.  As we look for his coming in glory, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

 THE COLLECT

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 3 & 4 – Year “A” Readings)

First Reading                                      Isaiah 2: 1-5

God promises a time of justice and peace for all the nations, when they will follow his teaching; Isaiah urges his own nation to walk in that light now.

Second Reading                                Romans 13: 11-14

Believing in Christ, we are nearer to salvation and can arm ourselves with his light to chase away the darkness of self centred behaviour.

Gospel                                                  St. Matthew 24: 36-44

We do not know when the fullness of salvation will dawn, so Jesus urges us to live our whole lives in readiness for his coming.

 POST COMMUNION PRAYER

O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear,

he may not find us sleeping in sin

but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Advent Candle Ceremony

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT – The Candle of Christian Hope

All:  We have this Advent Ring to remind us of the Coming of Jesus, the Light of

the World.

ALL SING:                            The holly and the ivy,

                                                Are dancing in a ring,

                                                Round the coloured Advent candles

                                                And the shining Christmas King.

Said together: (as first candle is lit)

All:  We light this candle to remind us of God’s people who in every age watch for His Coming.

ALL SING:                          And one is for God’s people

                                                In every age and day.

We are watching for His coming,

                                                We believe and we obey.

 Psalm 122

1 I was glad when they said to me, ¨ ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’

2 And now our feet are standing ¨ within your gates, O Jerusalem;

3 Jerusalem, built as a city ¨ that is at unity in itself.

4 Thither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, ¨ as is decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

5 For there are set the thrones of judgement, ¨ the thrones of the house of David.

6 O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ¨ ‘May they prosper who love you.

OPEN MEETING

Everyone is invited to an Open meeting on Sunday, December 11th at 12 noon in the Church Rooms.

We have now completed the first six months of the new pattern of worship at St. Petroc’s and St. Saviour’s and I promised that we would have a get together at the end of that period to gauge how things are going with the non-Eucharistic services of BCP Morning Prayer and “Service of the Word”.

We would really value your opinions on how YOU think they are going so please come along and have your say. Coffee will be served at the start of the meeting.

May I say a tremendous thank you to our worship leaders for all that they are doing with the new services and also with the “Teatime” family services.

All Scripture is inspired by God, calling us and equipping us to serve our Lord Jesus Christ, whose life-giving love reveals the glory, wisdom and truth of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in our lives and in our world.

 COLLECT FOR BIBLE SUNDAY

Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning:

Help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

 READINGS FOR TODAY (Page 1092/1093)

First Reading                                     Isaiah 45.22-25

There is no power in the universe except the God of Israel.

Second Reading                              Romans 15.1-6

The scriptures are available to us so that we may find encouragement and hope as we learn from them.

 Gospel                                                  St. Luke 4.16-24

Jesus adopts Isaiah’s description of the prophet’s calling as a blueprint for his own ministry.

 POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom:

Renew your people with your heavenly grace,

and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread;

who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

 Psalm for today 119: 129-136

129 Your testimonies are wonderful; ¨ therefore my soul keeps them.

130 The opening of your word gives light; ¨ it gives understanding to the simple.

131 I open my mouth and draw in my breath, ¨ as I long for your commandments.

132 Turn to me and be gracious to me, ¨ as is your way with those who love your name.

133 Order my steps by your word, ¨ and let no wickedness have dominion over me.

134 Redeem me from earthly oppressors ¨ so that I may keep your commandments.

135 Show the light of your countenance upon your servant ¨ and teach me your statutes.

136 My eyes run down with streams of water, ¨ because the wicked do not keep your law.

WE’RE OFF!!
On Tuesday afternoon (27th) we had an excellent meeting with the contractors and the architect to dot the I’s and cross the T’s for the restoration of the tower.
We definitely start on Monday October 17th with the arrival of the scaffolding.
It will take approximately 3 weeks to completely shroud the tower in scaffolding and PINK protective sheeting – it will certainly be seen that’s for sure!!!
Work will then begin in earnest so please will you do all you can to avoid using the church car park in the week and as little as possible on Sundays as the contractors will be using up to half of the car park for storage and materials and there will be various clubs using the Church Rooms.
PLEASE can you try to car share during the works or even use the top car park to alleviate parking problems on our car park. PLEASE do not park out on the road if you don’t have a blue badge as you may be pinched.
We will be taking photos of the work as it progresses and putting them on our church website and also having an ongoing display in church.
Sincere apologies in advance but I’m sure it will all be worth it in the end.
Thanks for your help and consideration folks. PLEASE BE PATIENT.
Fr. Chris.
