  August 13th 2017– 9th Sunday After Trinity – (Proper 14)

 A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

 Introduction to worship

Let us come today to worship our heavenly Father who, in the midst of our weakness, brings us his strength and power.

THE COLLECT FOR THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit

to be the life and light of your church:  Open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of thy Spirit

in love and joy and peace;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

The Lectionary Readings (Page 279/281)

Old Testament Reading                              1 Kings 19: 9-18

Elijah has just demonstrated the power of God but now faces the wrath of Jezebel, who threatens his life. He flees to Mount Horeb where he encounters God.

New Testament Reading                            Romans 10: 5-15

Paul deals with the position of the Jews now that the new covenant in Christ has come. Here he asserts that faith in Christ brings salvation.

Gospel Reading                                             St. Matthew 14:  22-33

Having just fed the five thousand, Jesus sends them home and instructs his disciples to set off across the lake without him, as he goes to pray. In the early hours of the morning, the disciples are shocked by a staggering sight approaching them on the water.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Holy Father, who gathered us here around the table of your Son

to share this meal with the whole household of God:

In that new world where you reveal the fullness of your peace,

gather people of every race and language to share the eternal banquet of

Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

PLEASE, only use the car park if you really need to, we don’t want to see any cars getting damaged.  If you are using the car park for mid-week services, please park away from the church rooms area.  Any problems get in touch with your Churchwardens.  Thank you for your patience.

INTRODUCTION

Today we are led through death into life, preparing us for the same journey through the events of Holy Week to the Resurrection.

THE COLLECT

Most merciful God,

who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ

delivered and saved the world:

grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross

we may triumph in the power of his victory;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS – Page 105/108

First Reading                                                      Ezekiel 37: 1 – 14

God can breathe life into that which appears dead and promises as much to his people. We can find new life and a new future.

Second Reading                                                Roman 8: 6 – 11

God’s Spirit, living in us, gives immortal life to our mortal bodies.

Gospel                                                                  St. John 11: 1 – 45

As Lazarus is raised from the dead so we too will be resurrected when Jesus’ passion and sacrifice frees us from the bonds of death.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us

that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you:  Give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever.  Amen

INTRODUCTION

As we need to quench our bodily thirst, so do we need to quench our spiritual thirst, our deep desire and need for God.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy

but first he suffered pain,

and entered not into glory before he was crucified:

mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,

may find it none other than the way of life and peace;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (pages 93/96)

Old Testament Reading                                                Exodus 17: 1-7

The Israelites were thirsty and rebellious, doubting God and Moses. But God answers doubts and provides for his people when they listen to his word.

New Testament Reading                                              Romans 5: 1-11

Like water onto a parched land, God’s Spirit has been poured into our hearts and Christ has shown his love for us by dying to set us free.

Gospel                                                                                 St. John 4: 5-42

Jesus offered the living water and the living bread to all people, even his enemies. And today, all are welcome at the fountain head of life.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations

of the world, the flesh and the devil,

and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Do you enjoy poetry? We are a small group who meet in each other’s homes every 4 –6 weeks. The group has been going for many years and more recently was led by the late Phillip Mossman. A poet or subject is chosen and we each go away to research the poet and select poems we would like to share over afternoon tea. For many years the late Revd Barry Kinsmen delighted us with his spoken word and wonderful recitation of the poems of Charles Causley and John Betjeman. Jesus Christ brought new life and hope into the world, and called his disciples to receive it and to be his friends. Today pray we can worship and serve him personally.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth,

that they may return to the way of righteousness:

grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion,

that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession,

and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same;

through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS – Page 90/91

God calls Abraham to make a new start in his life, through which God would bless the entire world.

Second Reading                                Romans 4:1-5, 13-17

The Mosaic Law gave us the 10 commandments. Jesus gives his explanation of how to live.  He gives us our “Rule of Life”

 THE COLLECT

Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity:  Give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                    Deuteronomy 30: 15 – end

God gives the way to live so that the Jewish people will be blessed by the Lord their God – the Way of life. The alternative is the way of death.

Second Reading                                1 Corinthians 3: 1-9

Paul rebukes party-spirit in the church; for it has only one foundation, Jesus Christ himself.

 Gospel                                                St. Matthew 5: 21 – 37

Jesus continues the “Sermon on the Mount”, teaching the inner meaning of the Ten Commandments

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Father, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life, that those who come to him should never hunger:

Draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

 Residents are asked to exercise caution when receiving calls purported to be from your or another Bank: Police received a report of a member of the public being phoned by a Bank to report £400 had been stolen from their account. The caller even told them to tell shop or bank staff “It’s presents for the grandchildren” They were told another person would call back requesting the serial numbers of the iTUNE cards and also to scratch off the foil on the rear to reveal a smaller number.  Both sets of numbers would then allow the caller to purchase goods to the value of £2000.  The phone number used was 01424758899, which is registered to Hastings in Sussex, both the callers were described as female and very polite and convincing. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU – Heartiest congratulations and a massive thank you to Sue Norfolk and Linda Morey for masterminding two events for us.

Over the past 2 weeks they have raised £2,089.96 for the Coracle Appeal with the Christmas Craft Fair in the Church rooms on November 26th and the amazing Crib and Quilt Exhibition in St. Petroc’s from the 1st to the 4th December.  The Craft Fair raised £300 and the Crib and Quilt Exhibition raised £1789.96 which included the collection at the closing service on Sunday.    The idea of having quilts as well as 127 cribs – yes 127 – was inspired.  It gave the exhibition a whole new feel  – a feeling of warmth and colour as the quilts were draped amongst the cribs.  Sue and Linda have spent hours and hours in church preparing, stewarding and dismantling the exhibition and the outreach from the two events has, once again, been amazing as we have received some very kind and complimentary comments about keeping the true meaning of Christmas alive..      Thanks to everyone who helped in any way – by loaning cribs, stewarding and serving and donating refreshments.  There is a lovely piece on the Diocesan Website with some great photos which all helps to keep St. Petroc’s on the map.  A special thank you to Sue and Linda our VERY hard working churchwardens.    Fr. Chris.

 INTRODUCTION

Jesus was the son of David and the Son of God, King of kings and Lord of lords. In him, we can see the hope for the whole world.

 THE COLLECT

O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us,

and with great might succour us;

that whereas, through our sins and wickedness

we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us,

your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

be honour and glory, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 6/8)

The ideal Davidic King will rule with justice and wisdom, peace and harmony, holiness and glory.

Jesus Christ welcomes us into knowing God the Father, the God of truth, hope and faithful encouragement, so that we might live in his Kingdom by faith and with joy.

Gospel                                                             St. Matthew 3. 1 12

 POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Father in heaven, who sent your Son to redeem the world

and will send him again to be our judge:

3 May the mountains bring forth peace, ¨ and the little hills righteousness for the people.

4 May he defend the poor among the people, ¨ deliver the children of the needy and crush the oppressor.

5 May he live as long as the sun and moon endure, ¨ from one generation to another.

6 May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, ¨ like the showers that water the earth.

7 In his time shall righteousness flourish, ¨ and abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more.

 OPEN MEETING

Everyone is invited to an Open meeting on Sunday, December 11th at 12 noon in the Church Rooms.

We have now completed the first six months of the new pattern of worship at St. Petroc’s and St. Saviour’s and I promised that we would have a get together at the end of that period to gauge how things are going with the non-Eucharistic services of BCP Morning Prayer and “Service of the Word”.

We would really value your opinions on how YOU think they are going so please come along and have your say. Coffee will be served at the start of the meeting.

May I say a tremendous thank you to our worship leaders for all that they are doing with the new services and also with the “Teatime” family services.
