A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Today Jesus proclaims that the words of the Prophets are fulfilled and good news is given to the poor; we are all one in the Body of Christ.

THE COLLECT

God our creator, who in the beginning

commanded the light to shine out of darkness:

we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ

may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief,

shine into the hearts of all your people,

and reveal the knowledge of your glory

in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Generous Lord, in word and eucharist we have proclaimed the mystery of your love: help us so to live out our days

that we may be signs of your wonders in the world;

through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

THE READINGS   (Page 780/782)

First Reading                                             Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10

Ezra reads from the book of the law of Moses. He encourages the people to be confident and filled with joy.

Second Reading                                      1 Corinthians 12:12-31a

Paul writes about the nature of the Body of Christ. Through Baptism and the Eucharist we are all made parts of that body.

WEEKLY NEWS

for the United Benefice of

Padstow, St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

SUNDAY 23rd DECEMBER – FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

As we approach Christmas we become aware of the mystery of God’s action in our lives, often uncovered through our relationships with others.

THE COLLECT FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

God our redeemer, who prepared the Blessed Virgin Mary

to be the mother of your Son:

grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour,

so we may be ready to greet him when he comes again as our judge;

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 744/746)

First Reading                                        Micah 5:2-5a

Gifts from God often appear from unexpected sources: a small, if historic, town south of Jerusalem and an unknown, unnamed young girl. Mysteries are slowly uncovered over long years.

Second Reading                             Hebrews 10:5-10

God uncovers the new reality of the meaning of sacrifice. Built on the foundation of the Jewish Law, but transformed and perfected in Jesus.

Gospel                                                   Luke 1:39-45

The mystery of God’s incarnation begins with humble people in secrecy until the right moment occurs to uncover the momentous gift.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Heavenly Father, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of the promised saviour:  fill us your servants with your grace,

that in all things we may embrace your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

THE ADVENT RING CEREMONY

Said together: (As the first three candles are lit)

We have this Advent Ring to remind us of the Coming of Jesus, the Light of the World.

SING:            The holly and the ivy, are dancing in a ring,

Round the coloured Advent candles, and the shining Christmas King.

Said together: (as the fourth candle is lit)

All: We light this candle to remind us of Mother Mary

who told God she would obey.

SING:           And four for Mother Mary: “I cannot see the way,

But you promise me a baby, I believe you, I obey”.

DECEMBER 30TH 2018 – 1st SUNDAY OF CHRISTMAS

INTRODUCTION

Today is the day to stand aside from all that the world makes of Christmas. To look for a moment at the true miracle that Christmas is – the coming of the Son of God, God himself into the world to be our salvation.

THE COLLECT FOR 1st SUNDAY OF CHRISTMAS

Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image
and yet more wonderfully restored us
through your Son Jesus Christ:
grant that, as he came to share in our humanity,
so we may share the life of his divinity;
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 762/764)

First Reading                                      1 Samuel 2: 18-20, 26

Samuel served the Lord in the temple.  His mother would bring him a new robe each year when she visited the temple with her husband.

Second Reading                                Colossians 3:12-17

In the space of six verses St. Paul characterises the very heart of the Christian Way.

Gospel                                                  St. Luke 2:41-52

Jesus knew where he his first duty should be – serving his father in the temple.  May we, like him, make our love for God our first priority in our lives.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son shared at Nazareth

the life of an earthly home:
help your Church to live as one family,
united in love and obedience,
and bring us all at last to our home in heaven;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
