SUNDAY MARCH 17th: The Second Sunday of Lent

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take

our love and prayers to your home parish.

 Introduction

By God’s presence and power, we have been made citizens of God’s heavenly Kingdom. Let us worship the living God, whose life amongst us moves us to hear and heed his words, and draws us closer to home in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

 THE COLLECT

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth, that they may return to the way of righteousness:
grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same;
through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Almighty God, you see that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 820-822)

First Reading                         Genesis 15. 1-12, 17-18

The prophetic call to Abram and to his descendants about the promised land, their future Homeland.

Philippians 3: 17 –  4.1

We are to know ourselves as citizens not of earthly political kingdoms, but of

the heavenly kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel                                    St. Luke 13. 31-35

Jesus Christ, Prophet and King, uses feminine language to show he is present to us just as the wings of a mother hen are home for her brood.

                   SUNDAY MARCH 10th : The First Sunday of Lent

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take

our love and prayers to your home parish.

Introduction

In Lent we renew our desire to fulfil God’s purposes. Let us turn to God in prayer and repent of the same human pride which crucified our Lord.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness,
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:
give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit;
and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever Amen .

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven;
by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love:
teach us always to hunger for him who is the true and living bread,
and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 816/819)

First Reading                          Deuteronomy 26.1-11

The ancient Israelites regularly reminded themselves of the relationship

between themselves and a loving, generous God, who had chosen to make

himself known to them. A recital of his past saving acts acknowledged that

they were constantly in his debt and must give him praise and honour.

Second Reading                                 Romans 10.8b-13

St Paul stresses the continuity of the new revelation of God in Christ with the

covenant described in the Old Testament. Yet salvation has now become

available to all who confess their faith in the God who gives life and

overcomes death.

Gospel                                                St. Luke 4.1-13

The human Jesus had to resist the chance to see himself as more powerful

than God: in the desert places of the Christian year, especially Lent, we must

also learn to resist, recognising the true nature of temptation.

                             SUNDAY MARCH 3RD : The Sunday Next Before Lent

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

Introduction

As Jesus prayed, the disciples saw his face shine with the glory of the Lord.  In our worship today, may we see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

THE COLLECT

Almighty Father,
whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death upon the cross:
give us grace to perceive his glory,
that we may be strengthened to suffer with him
and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

O holy God,
we behold your glory in the face of Jesus Christ:
grant that we who are partakers at his table
may reflect his life in word and deed,
that all the world may know his power to change and save;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 807/809)

First Reading                         Exodus 34:29-35

Interceding with God for his rebellious people and receiving the commandments, Moses’ face radiated God’s glory. This frightened the Israelites so he wore a veil.

Second Reading                                 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2

The new covenant in Christ allows us unveiled access to God, whose Spirit enables us increasingly to reflect his glory as we turn to him in confidence.

Gospel                                                 St. Luke 9:28-36

Like Moses, Jesus radiates the glory of God, but he is the Son, outshining both

Moses and Elijah, as the new covenant eclipses the Law and the Prophets.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24th : Second Sunday before Lent

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

Introduction

Heaven’s door is open to us in this place that we may experience the power and glory of God.   Let us join with the voices of heaven and give worthy praise to the living and loving Trinity.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth
and made us in your own image:
teach us to discern your hand in all your works
and your likeness in all your children;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who with you and the Holy Spirit

reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever.  Amen

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

God our creator, by your gift
the tree of life was set at the heart of the earthly paradise,
and the bread of life at the heart of your Church:
may we who have been nourished at your table on earth
be transformed by the glory of the Saviour’s cross

and enjoy the delights of eternity;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 803/806)

First Reading                     Genesis 2:4b-9, 15-25

Genesis means “beginnings” and here the writer presents a picture of God’s

Creating power that brings all things to life and creates a pattern for human relationships.

Second Reading                Revelation 4

A door is opened to reveal God’s eternal kingdom for those who seek him. A picture of heaven is painted to reveal the beauty and wonder of all that is holy.

Gospel                                St. Luke 8:22-25

Jesus rebuked the wind and waves to bring calm as the Father had brought order to the chaos when time began. The disciples still have yet to recognise just who Jesus really is and why he has come.

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God,
who alone can bring order
to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity:
give your people grace so to love what you command
and to desire what you promise,
that, among the many changes of this world,
our hearts may surely there be fixed

where true joys are to be found;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Father,

who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life,
that those who come to him should never hunger:

draw us to the Lord in faith and love,
that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom,
where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10th : Fourth Sunday before Lent

 A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus called his first disciples. Today we hear of Jesus finding new ways to talk to people and to teach them, and we hear of his calling of those first disciples.  May we hear Jesus calling us.

THE COLLECT

O God, you know us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright:

grant to us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Go before us, Lord, in all we do with your most gracious favour, and guide us with your continual help,

that in all our works begun, continued and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally by your mercy receive everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

READINGS FOR TODAY  (Lectionary pages 794/796)

First Reading                         Isaiah 6: 1-8

Isaiah’s vision of the glory of God – where we get the ‘holy, holy, holy’ from.

Second Reading                    1 Corinthians 15: 1-11

Some Christians in Corinth had questioned the teachings of the resurrection of the dead. St. Paul argues that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ proves it.

Gospel                                    St. Luke 5: 1-11

The miraculous catch of fish leads to the call of Simon Peter. “From now on you will be catching people”. James, John and Simon all followed him.

PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN THE TEMPLE

 (CANDLEMAS)

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

In accordance with what is written in the law of the Lord, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. As they brought Jesus to be dedicated for service, let us offer ourselves as living sacrifices for the worship of God.

THE COLLECT

Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son was this day

presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh:
grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna,

who lived to welcome the Messiah:
may we, who have received these gifts beyond words,
prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he comes

to bring us to eternal life;

for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS Page 788/789)

Old Testament Reading                                Malachi 3:1 – 5

Malachi, Prophesying Christ, speaks of his coming among them to refine and to purify and to prepare Israel for judgement.

New Testament Reading                              Hebrews 2:14 – 18

Jesus, come from God, became man, so that in suffering, in temptation, in dying and in rising, he might atone for our sins and free us to follow him into glory. He now is, where we will be.

Gospel                                                            St. Luke 2:22 – 40

Mary and Joseph consecrate Jesus to the Lord. Simeon looks upon the child and beholds the salvation of Israel, one destined to bring about the falling and rising of many, and a light also for the Gentiles, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
