SUNDAY August 18th Ninth Sunday after Trinity
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.
The Good News is not joyfully received by everyone, those who try to spread the Gospel message often face hostility and rejection. But we gather here today to celebrate God’s presence and his victory over evil and death.
THE COLLECT FOR THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your Church: open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit
in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Holy Father, who gathered us here around the table of your Son to share this meal with the whole household of God: in that new world where you reveal the fullness of your peace, gather people of every race and language to share in the eternal banquet of Jesus Christ our Lord.
THE READINGS Proper 15 (Page 1015/1017)
First Reading Jeremiah 23:23-29
God indicates the difference between true and false prophets. Those who draw people to God and those who hoodwink them for their own ends. This can also be our yardstick.
Second Reading Hebrews 11:29 -12:2
So many unsung heroes whose devotion to God is unrecognised built a foundation of faith from which we proceed, let their inspiration strengthen our perseverance.
Gospel St. Luke 12:49-56
Christianity may lead to division between those who accept Christ and those who do not. The cost of discipleship can be higher than we realise.

Padstow Mariner Nicholas Watts was a midshipman on the ‘London’ who died overseas on 21 August 1632. Watts was not married and left his £300 estate to his mother to be used after her death for the poor of the Parish. Watts’ estate helped to finance the alms houses in Middle Street. The will also stipulated that 12 shillings a year to be paid to the St. Petroc’s bell ringers to ring “a peal” on each anniversary of his death. This was done for many years and became known as Watts’ Knell. The 12 shillings for the ringers was put towards the bell team’s annual day out. An article, with a photo of the ringers, appeared in the Cornish Guardian in 1982, when the bells were rung on the 350th anniversary.
St. Petroc’s bell ringers will be ring Watts’ Knell on Wednesday 21 August at 2pm
