“Weekly News” for
THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW
ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR
21st SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 24)
SUNDAY OCTOBER 21st 2018
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today. Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.
Today Jesus tells his disciples that if they want to become great they must be servants of each other. Jesus came not to be served but to serve and to give his life for our salvation.
COLLECT FOR THE 21st SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord,
to your faithful people pardon and peace.
That they may be cleansed from all their sins
and serve you with a quiet mind;
Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
READINGS FOR TODAY – Proper 24 (Page 698/700)
First Reading Isaiah 53: 4-12
The prophet Isaiah tells of a righteous servant of God who, through his suffering, will make others righteous and will intercede for sinners.
Second Reading Hebrews 5: 1-10
Jesus, although sinless, was called to become a high priest and through his suffering and obedience he becomes the source of salvation for all.
Gospel St. Mark 10: 35-45
Jesus once again tries to teach his disciples that the way to glory, to God’s kingdom, is through service to others even at the cost of great suffering, and that the glory of the Kingdom cannot be earned or deserved, it is given through God’s grace.
Father of light, in whom is no change of shadow of turning, you give the gift and have brought us to birth by your word of truth:
May we be a living sign of your kingdom where your whole creation will be made perfect in Jesus Christ our Lord.
