 21st  SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 24)

SUNDAY OCTOBER 21st 2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Today Jesus tells his disciples that if they want to become great they must be servants of each other. Jesus came not to be served but to serve and to give his life for our salvation.

COLLECT FOR THE 21st  SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord,

to your faithful people pardon and peace.

That they may be cleansed from all their sins

and serve you with a quiet mind;

Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

READINGS FOR TODAY  – Proper 24 (Page 698/700)

First Reading                     Isaiah 53: 4-12

The prophet Isaiah tells of a righteous servant of God who, through his suffering, will make others righteous and will intercede for sinners.

Second Reading                Hebrews 5: 1-10

Jesus, although sinless, was called to become a high priest and through his suffering and obedience he becomes the source of salvation for all.

Gospel                                  St. Mark 10: 35-45

Jesus once again tries to teach his disciples that the way to glory, to God’s kingdom, is through service to others even at the cost of great suffering, and that the glory of the Kingdom cannot be earned or deserved, it is given through God’s grace.

Father of light, in whom is no change of shadow of turning, you give the gift and have brought us to birth by your word of truth:

May we be a living sign of your kingdom where your whole creation will be made perfect in Jesus Christ our Lord.

20TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 23)

SUNDAY OCTOBER 14TH 2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

In our worship today, let us dare to open ourselves to acknowledge our wealth and our failure to ensure that all human beings share in it.

COLLECT FOR THE 20th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

God, the giver of life, whose Holy Spirit wells up within your Church:

by the Spirit’s gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ

and make us eager to do your will,

that we may share with the whole creation the joys of eternal life;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

READINGS FOR TODAY  – Proper 23 (Page 693/694)

First Reading                                  Amos 5: 6-7, 10-15

Amos calls for social justice, warning that only those who care for and support the disadvantaged in society will know the amazing life promised by God.

Second Reading                                Hebrews 4: 12-end

The writer of the letter to the Hebrews warns that the word of God will judge our hidden intentions, but that Jesus understands our human condition and is there for us.

Gospel                                                                  St. Mark 10: 17-31

Jesus asserts that those who are rich will find it almost impossible to be part of God’s kingdom. But he adds that, for God, all things are possible.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

God our Father, whose Son, the light unfailing, has come from heaven to deliver the world from the darkness of ignorance: let these holy mysteries open the eyes of our understanding that we may know the way of life, and walk in it without stumbling;  through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

SUNDAY OCTOBER 7TH 2018

INTRODUCTION

We give thanks for our individuality but also thank God for our families and friends and the joys of love and marriage.

COLLECT FOR THE 19th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

O God, forasmuch as without you we are not able to please you;
mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit
may in all things direct and rule our hearts;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS FOR TODAY (Page 688/9)

First Reading                         Genesis 2: 18 – 24

God designs human beings to be social creatures, not isolated individuals. They are made to live in harmony with each other, with the rest of the created world, and with God.

Second Reading                   Hebrews 1: 1 – 4; 2: 5 – 12

Jesus is the perfect reflection of God, showing us what we human beings were designed for. By sharing our lives and our suffering, Jesus opens up the way for us to share in his glory.

Gospel                                   St. Mark 10: 2 – 16

Jesus’ teaching on divorce and on the value of children puts them in the context of God’s purposes in creating human beings.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Holy and blessed God,  you have fed us with the body and blood of your Son
and filled us with your Holy Spirit:
may we honour you, not only with our lips but in lives

dedicated to the service of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen
