 12th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 15)

SUNDAY AUGUST 19TH   2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

In this Eucharist, we gather in faith to be nourished and renewed by the presence of the living Lord as we receive the sacrament in his name.

THE COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God,

you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation

of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 649/650)

First Reading                         Proverbs 9:1-6

Wisdom calls those who are simple in heart to follow her and walk in the way of insight that leads to fullness of life.

Second Reading                                   Ephesians 5:15-20

The writer cautions his readers to live wisely, and “understand what the will of the Lord is”. He encourages them to give thanks to God for all his gifts.

Gospel                                   St. John 6:51-58

Jesus claims to be the living “bread that came down from heaven”. He promises the gift of eternal life to all who “eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood”.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

God of all mercy, in this Eucharist you have set aside our sins and given us your healing: grant that we who are made whole in Christ may bring that healing to this broken world,  in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus Christ has the words of eternal life. We believe and know that he is the Holy One of God.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up on the cross,
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

God our creator, you feed your children with the true manna,

the living bread from heaven:

until we come to that place where hunger and thirst are no more;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

12th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 14)

SUNDAY AUGUST 12TH   2018

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.  Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus offers himself to us as the bread of life, spiritual food.  In our worship let us feed on him, so that he may fill our very being with his love and his life.

THE COLLECT

O God, you declare your almighty power
most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace,
that we, running the way of your commandments,
may receive your gracious promises,
and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 644/646 – Proper 14)

First Reading                                           1 Kings 19:4-8

Elijah flees from his enemies into the wilderness.  Exhausted in body and mind, he tells God he can go no further.  God supplies the rest and food so he can continue.

Second Reading                      Ephesians 4:25–5:2

Paul gives the Ephesian Christians practical examples of how they should live together.  He sums up by encouraging them to imitate Christ’s sacrificial love.

Gospel                                                   John 6:35, 41-51

Jesus declares that he is the bread of life.  His enemies question his authority to make such bold claims, but Jesus asserts that those who feed on him through faith will receive eternal life.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord of all mercy, we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace:  By our communion keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us from all sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

be open to the prayers of your humble servants;

First Reading                                        Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15
