THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW
ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR
12th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 15)
SUNDAY AUGUST 19TH 2018
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today. Please take our love and prayers to your home parish.
INTRODUCTION
In this Eucharist, we gather in faith to be nourished and renewed by the presence of the living Lord as we receive the sacrament in his name.
THE COLLECT
Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation
of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 649/650)
First Reading Proverbs 9:1-6
Wisdom calls those who are simple in heart to follow her and walk in the way of insight that leads to fullness of life.
Second Reading Ephesians 5:15-20
The writer cautions his readers to live wisely, and “understand what the will of the Lord is”. He encourages them to give thanks to God for all his gifts.
Gospel St. John 6:51-58
Jesus claims to be the living “bread that came down from heaven”. He promises the gift of eternal life to all who “eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood”.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER
God of all mercy, in this Eucharist you have set aside our sins and given us your healing: grant that we who are made whole in Christ may bring that healing to this broken world, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CHRIS AND ROSEMARY GREAVES – Chris and Rosemary have bid a fond farewell to Padstow to live near their family. They have asked me to pass on their thanks and good wishes to all their friends at church, and thank you for the friendship, love and kindness shown to them.
If you would like to stay in touch their new address is No.3 Stathams Court, Hemel Hempstead Road, Redbourn, St. Albans. AL3 7SA. Tel: 01582 270800
ROGER PENNA – We send our love, thoughts and prayers to Roger our organist, as he recovers in hospital from his recent fall. Sally has informed me that he is still very poorly and it is going to take a long time to recover from his injuries. We are indebted to Jamie our young assistant organist who is going to take the reins for our Sunday services and forthcoming weddings, until further notice.
SLEEPING BAGS AND DUVETS – St. Petroc’s Society currently have no sleeping bags and only a few duvets in their store. If you have any that you don’t need please contact Fiona (532956). Thank you.
SUNDAY, 26TH AUGUST 13TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (Proper 16)
INTRODUCTION
Jesus Christ has the words of eternal life. We believe and know that he is the Holy One of God.
THE COLLECT
Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up on the cross,
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER
God our creator, you feed your children with the true manna,
the living bread from heaven:
let this holy food sustain us through our earthly pilgrimage
until we come to that place where hunger and thirst are no more;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
THE READINGS – Proper 16 (Lectionary Page 654/656)
Reading Joshua 24: 1-2a, 14-18
Joshua challenges the Israelites to choose which gods to serve. Those they left behind,
those of the peoples whose land they’ve occupied, or the one true God.
Reading Ephesians 6: 10-20
Paul makes it clear that our battle is a spiritual one against the forces of evil.
Among our weapons are truth, righteousness and faith.
Gospel St. John 6: 56-69
Jesus says that to live, people must feed off his flesh and blood. This physical image
of his spirit sustaining their spiritual lives means some of his followers leave him.
