 THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY

 with ST. PETROC MINOR

January 28th 2018 – FOURTH SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY

A warm welcome to any visitors with us today

INTRODUCTION

In this season of Epiphany, we are invited to look at the ways in which Jesus reveals his Divine nature. Today we hear of the authority of Jesus as he commands the unclean spirit to come out of the man possessed.

THE COLLECT

God our creator,

who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness:

we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ

may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief,

shine into the hearts of all your people,

and reveal the knowledge of your glory

in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                 Deuteronomy 18:15-20

The Old Testament promise of a prophet sent from God, which the Apostles found fulfilled in Christ.

Second Reading                            Revelation 12:1-5a

The vision of St. John the Divine continues with the sight of “a woman clothed with the sun.  She gave birth to a child who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron”.

Gospel                                           St. Mark 1:21-28

The authority of Jesus is without question. The man with the unclean spirit was healed when Jesus drove it.  “He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him”.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Generous Lord, in word and Eucharist we have proclaimed the mystery of your love:  Help us so to live out our days that we may be signs of your wonders in the world; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen

ST. MERRYN A Treasurer /Book-keeper is required for St. Merryn Church. Can anyone help? Please contact Phil Gorse 520544 or Moira Gill 520418 for further details.

Copies of the Reverend Nigel Marns’ book will be available to buy from Padstow very shortly.  The cost is £12 with £2 from each book going to Padstow Church.   If you would like to pre-order a copy please contact Sue Norfolk.

 THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

January 14th 2018 – SECOND SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY

A warm welcome to any visitors with us today

INTRODUCTION

Jesus calls us to be disciples, saying; “Follow Me!” We meet to hear his call, to respond to it, and to commit ourselves to service in his Church and in the world.

THE COLLECT FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY

Almighty God, in Christ you make all things new:

transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace,

and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen

THE READINGS (Page 421/424)

First Reading                                      1 Samuel 3: 1-10

God’s call to Samuel is persistent and unexpected. It is the tired old man, Eli, who recognizes what is happening and who is able to provide guidance.

Second Reading                              Revelation 5: 1-10

Who is worthy to discover the mind of God? The vision speaks of those from ‘every tribe, language, people and nation’ – no-one is left out from the call to serve God.

Gospel                                              St. John l: 43-51

The selection of the apostles seems to be a haphazard affair. These very ordinary followers are to become leaders. Being with Jesus will change disciples into apostles.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

God of glory, you nourish us with your Word who is the bread of life:

Fill us with your Holy Spirit that through us the light of your glory may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Frank ShaleIt is with great sadness that we announce the death of a truly lovely gentleman Frank Shale.  Many of you will remember Gwen and Frank who were regular church members before their move to Wales.  Gwen and Frank came back to Padstow back in September in what Gwen said would be Frank’s last visit to say good-bye to their many friends.  Frank passed away very peacefully last Sunday.  We send our condolences to Gwen and her family, and please remember them in your prayers.  May he Rest in Peace.
