 “Weekly News” for

 December 3rd 2017 – FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

 A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

Jesus says: “Stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Let us come before God, looking for our promised redemption with joy and with repentance.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness

and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life,

in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;

that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty

to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal;

through him who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 377/379 – Year “B” Readings start today)

First Reading                                                      Isaiah 64: 1-9

God’s people reflect upon their own guilt and come back to God, seeing themselves as clay in the hands of a potter, wanting to be shaped anew by him.

Second Reading                                                1 Corinthians 1: 3-9

Christ’s coming has filled us with immeasurable depth of grace, to equip us for the fullness of Christian life and prepare us for whatever comes.

Gospel                                                                  St. Mark 13: 24-37

Although false prophets declare that the “end is nigh”, no one knows when Jesus will return, so our task is to continue the work of the kingdom in the present and leave our future to God.

O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin

but active in his service and joyful in his praise;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Advent Candle Ceremony

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT – The Candle of Christian Hope

All:  We have this Advent Ring to remind us of the Coming of Jesus, the Light of

the World.

ALL SING:                            The holly and the ivy,

                                                Are dancing in a ring,

                                                Round the coloured Advent candles

                                                And the shining Christmas King.

Said together: (as first candle is lit)

All:  We light this candle to remind us of God’s people who in every age watch for His Coming.

ALL SING:                          And one is for God’s people

                                                In every age and day.

                                                We are watching for His coming,

                                                We believe and we obey.

A Rota is on the churchwardens’ chest at the back of the church if anyone can spare a couple of hours to steward the exhibition.

Also posters are available if anyone can help distribute them around the town, shops, in the neighbouring parishes etc.

If anyone could spare time to bake a cake or some mince pies that would be greatly appreciated.

This is great Outreach as we can involve the youngsters of our community and it gives them the opportunity to learn about the different cribs and the true meaning of Christmas.  Thank you.  Sue and Linda.
