                                              A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

The Spirit of the Lord has anointed us to preach good news to a troubled world: Christ is coming!

THE COLLECT

O Lord Jesus Christ, who at your first coming sent your messenger

to prepare your way before you:

Grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries

may likewise so prepare and make ready your way

by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,

that at your second coming to judge the world

we may be found an acceptable people in your sight;

for you are alive and reign with the Father

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 384/386)

First Reading                                      Isaiah 61: 1-4, 8-11

Jerusalem is to be restored. The poor will have their day and all nations will witness that our God is righteous and faithful.

Second Reading                             1 Thessalonians 5: 16-24

God is faithful. He will keep his promises. Let us therefore live lives that reflect his calling to us and let us be made pure and holy by his Spirit.

Gospel                                               St. John 1: 6-8,19-28

People thought John was the Christ, so he must have been a great man. Yet he used his greatness to point to Jesus, not to himself.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

We give you thanks, O Lord, for these heavenly gifts;

kindle in us the fire of your Spirit that when your Christ comes again

we may shine as lights before his face;

who is alive and reigns now and for ever.  Amen

 THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

 December 10th 2017 – SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

Preparing the way of the Lord is a responsibility for each one of us. At Advent we are called to set aside worldly concerns and make ready to welcome Christ anew.

THE COLLECT FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us,

and with great might succour us;

that whereas, through our sins and wickedness

we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us,

your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

be honour and glory, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 380/383)

First Reading                                                      Isaiah 40.1-11

To a people who have lost all they held dear, the news that the Lord has not abandoned them and will save them once more is good tidings indeed. They know in their hearts that God has the power to restore their nation.

Second Reading                                                                2 Peter 3.8-15a

Waiting on the Lord’s judgement demands our full attention: we must strive to live good lives, for we cannot know when or how his decisive action will take place.

Gospel                                                                  St. Mark 1.1-8

John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus, foretold by the inspired prophets of old. Some heeded his call to repentance and prepared themselves to receive the Lord.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Father in heaven, who sent your Son to redeem the world

and will send him again to be our judge:

give us grace so to imitate him in the humility and purity of his first coming

that, when he comes again, we may be ready to greet him with joyful love and firm faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

 December 3rd 2017 – FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

 A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus says: “Stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Let us come before God, looking for our promised redemption with joy and with repentance.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness

and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life,

in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;

that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty

to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal;

through him who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 377/379 – Year “B” Readings start today)

First Reading                                                      Isaiah 64: 1-9

God’s people reflect upon their own guilt and come back to God, seeing themselves as clay in the hands of a potter, wanting to be shaped anew by him.

Second Reading                                                1 Corinthians 1: 3-9

Christ’s coming has filled us with immeasurable depth of grace, to equip us for the fullness of Christian life and prepare us for whatever comes.

Gospel                                                                  St. Mark 13: 24-37

Although false prophets declare that the “end is nigh”, no one knows when Jesus will return, so our task is to continue the work of the kingdom in the present and leave our future to God.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin

but active in his service and joyful in his praise;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
