“Weekly News” for
THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW,
ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR
September 3rd 2017– 12th Sunday After Trinity – (Proper 17)
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.
Introduction to worship
Today our Lord reminds us of the potential costs of discipleship. With our faith and his power we can fulfil any vocation to which he calls us.
THE COLLECT FOR THE TWELTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 295/296)
First Reading Jeremiah 15:15-21
When we agree to serve the Lord according to his law then he becomes our rescuer and people turn to us because they hear God’s voice speaking through us.
Second Reading Romans 12:9-21
True disciples must try to purify their lives, placing all their faith in God to help them fulfil the requirements of Jesus’ teaching. It is not easy, but it is righteous living which overcomes evil.
Gospel St. Matthew 16:21-28
Disciples of Jesus must prepare themselves to live a different kind of life, in which the world’s values are turned upside down. Wealth and ease are sacrificed for the greater joy of service and eternal life.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER
God of all mercy, in this Eucharist you have set aside our sins and given us your healing: Grant that we who are made whole in Christ may bring that healing to this broken world, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Creationtide Service – Each September is designated by the Churches as ‘Creationtide’, or ‘A Season for Creation’, which finishes, most appropriately, on the day when we remember St Francis of Assisi, October 4th. Just before he left Bishop Tim sent a letter to all parishes encouraging us to consider how we are stewards of God’s creation, and expressing a wish that the church should take ‘a strong lead in climate change and resilience’.
A special service for the season of Creationtide will be held in St. Petroc’s on Sunday 17th. September at 3.30pm. This will be Celtic style worship giving thanks for God’s creation, but also aiming to raise questions about our Christian response to today’s environmental issues. There will be stations around the church for individual pondering and prayer, activities for children, and time to chat over tea and cake after the service.
For more information please talk to Fiona Giorla (532956)
Cornish Celtic Way Festival Walk – The new Cornish Celtic Way Walk Festival commenced on Friday 25th August and for the next two weeks Pilgrims will be walking the new route, set up by the Revd. Coffee and tea will be served from 9.00 a.m. in the church before setting off. Is there anyone who would like to help serve tea or coffee?
