A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

 Introduction to worship

When we turn our faces towards God and call upon his mercy our sins are forgiven. In God’s presence, as we share our worship, we become reconciled to each other and to the one who made us in love.

THE COLLECT FOR THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Almighty God, whose only Son has opened for us

a new and living way into your presence:

Give us pure hearts and steadfast wills

to worship you in spirit and in truth;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

THE READINGS – Lectionary Pages 306/308

First Reading                                     Genesis 50:15-21

God knows when others try to harm us. But if we can forgive them, then God can turn a sorrowful situation into good – for us and for them

Second Reading                                Romans 14:1-12

Paul deals here with practical aspects of the Christian life. Here he appeals for Christians to bear with their brothers and sisters who have weaker consciences.

Gospel                                                  St. Matthew 18:21-35

Jesus has been teaching his disciples about how to deal with Christians who sin against them. Peter wants to know how often he should forgive such people.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord God, the source of truth and love,

keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,

united in prayer and the breaking of bread,

and one in joy and simplicity of heart,

in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Being a follower of Jesus is about responding to what God has already given us in terms of his unconditional love, his forgiveness, his involvement in our lives and his overwhelming generosity.  In this year’s roadshow, we will look afresh at what God’s grave involves, and explore five practical areas in which our responses can be grounded.

Please do come and join us, and encourage others in your parishes to come too.

Newsletter – 3 September 2017

 “Weekly News” for

THE UNITED BENEFICE OF PADSTOW,

ST. MERRYN and ST. ISSEY with ST. PETROC MINOR

            September 3rd 2017– 12th Sunday After Trinity – (Proper 17)

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

 Introduction to worship

Today our Lord reminds us of the potential costs of discipleship. With our faith and his power we can fulfil any vocation to which he calls us.

THE COLLECT FOR THE TWELTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Almighty and everlasting God,

you are always more ready to hear than we to pray

and to give more than either we desire or deserve:

Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,

forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid

and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask

but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE READINGS (Lectionary Page 295/296)

First Reading                                   Jeremiah 15:15-21

When we agree to serve the Lord according to his law then he becomes our rescuer and people turn to us because they hear God’s voice speaking through us.

Second Reading                                Romans 12:9-21

True disciples must try to purify their lives, placing all their faith in God to help them fulfil the requirements of Jesus’ teaching. It is not easy, but it is righteous living which overcomes evil.

Gospel                                               St. Matthew 16:21-28

Disciples of Jesus must prepare themselves to live a different kind of life, in which the world’s values are turned upside down. Wealth and ease are sacrificed for the greater joy of service and eternal life.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

God of all mercy, in this Eucharist you have set aside our sins and given us your healing: Grant that we who are made whole in Christ may bring that healing to this broken world, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Creationtide ServiceEach September is designated by the Churches as ‘Creationtide’, or ‘A Season for Creation’, which finishes, most appropriately, on the day when we remember St Francis of Assisi, October 4th. Just before he left Bishop Tim sent a letter to all parishes encouraging us to consider how we are stewards of God’s creation, and expressing a wish that the church should take ‘a strong lead in climate change and resilience’.

A special service for the season of Creationtide will be held in St. Petroc’s on Sunday 17th. September at 3.30pm. This will be Celtic style worship giving thanks for God’s creation, but also aiming to raise questions about our Christian response to today’s environmental issues. There will be stations around the church for individual pondering and prayer, activities for children, and time to chat over tea and cake after the service.

For more information please talk to Fiona Giorla (532956)

Cornish Celtic Way Festival WalkThe new Cornish Celtic Way Walk Festival commenced on Friday 25th August and for the next two weeks Pilgrims will be walking the new route, set up by the Revd. Nigel Marns.  The Padstow to Constantine Bay stage is set for Thursday 7th September leaving Padstow Church at 10.00 a.m.  All are welcome to join this walk.  Coffee and tea will be served from 9.00 a.m. in the church before setting off.  Is there anyone who would like to help serve tea or coffee?  Also a plea from the organisers is there a volunteer who would be a support car for the walk, to give lifts for those who can’t manage the whole distance?  Please let Sue Norfolk know who is the local contact 01841 532902.  Thank you.
