                               April 9th PALM SUNDAY – HOLY WEEK BEGINS

        A warm welcome to visitors who join us today especially Bishop Tim at Padstow

INTRODUCTION

Christ comes into our own lives today, in humility. Like the crowds on the first Palm Sunday, we greet him with joy. We pray for his presence among us as we share in the events of his Passion during this Holy Week.

THE COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God,

who in your tender love towards the human race

sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ

to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross:

grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility,

and also be made partakers of his resurrection;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (P110/117)

First Reading                                      Isaiah 50.4-9a

The prophet writes of the suffering servant, who accepts pain and degradation in the knowledge that God is his helper, who stands with him against his adversaries.

THE READING OF THE PASSION

                                                            St Matthew 27.11-54

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you humbled yourself in taking the form of a servant,

and in obedience died on the cross for our salvation:

Give us the mind to follow you and to proclaim you as Lord and King,

to the glory of God the Father.

Amen

A poet or subject is chosen and we each go away to research the poet and select poems we would like to share over afternoon tea. For many years the late Revd. Barry Kinsmen delighted us with his spoken word and wonderful recitation of the poems of Charles Causley and John Betjeman. If you are interested, PLEASE CONTACT Elizabeth Roberts 01841 540890

BISHOP TIM

I was so thrilled when Bishop Tim was available to join us in Padstow today and we offer him a very warm welcome.  His visit, however, is tinged with sadness for all of us as it will be his last visit to Padstow before he leaves the diocese to take up his new appointment as Bishop at Lambeth and Bishop to the Forces.

In his letter to the clergy announcing his move he said:

“I am of course filled with mixed emotions as I share this news with you.  I am very sorry to be leaving the Diocese of Truro and want to thank all of you and through you all those who work and witness to their Christian faith in all the churches and communities right across the diocese.  It has been a tremendous privilege, for the last eight years, to be among you and to work with you in striving to understand what God wants of us and how we can continue to proclaim afresh the Christian faith in this generation.

Sian and I will be very sorry to leave this wonderful part of the world where we have made many friends and know we will of course want to keep those friendships alive in the future”.

THANK YOU Bishop Tim for EVERYTHING you have done in the diocese of Truro and for the good times we have shared with you in the parish of Padstow.  Thank you also for helping us all through the untimely deaths of Revd. Barry Kinsmen Canon Julia Wilkinson with your love, care and prayers on our behalf.

God’s speed – we’ll all miss you so much and we wish you and Sian every happiness in this new phase of your life.

Fr. Chris

INTRODUCTION

Today we are led through death into life, preparing us for the same journey through the events of Holy Week to the Resurrection.

THE COLLECT

Most merciful God,

who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ

delivered and saved the world:

grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross

we may triumph in the power of his victory;

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS – Page 105/108

Second Reading                                                Roman 8: 6 – 11

God’s Spirit, living in us, gives immortal life to our mortal bodies.

Gospel                                                                  St. John 11: 1 – 45

As Lazarus is raised from the dead so we too will be resurrected when Jesus’ passion and sacrifice frees us from the bonds of death.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us

that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you:  Give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever.  Amen

                                        March 26th 2017 – MOTHERING SUNDAY

                                   A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

Today is Mothering Sunday. It is a time to thank God for our mothers and all they have done for us. It is also a time when we think about “Mother” Church and the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.

THE COLLECT

God of compassion, whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary,

shared the life of a home in Nazareth,

and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself:

strengthen us in our daily living

that in joy and in sorrow we may know the power of your presence

to bind together and to heal;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.   Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                      Exodus 2:1–10

In a basket among the reeds of the Nile, Moses is given up to the Lord’s care. But the Lord is merciful and the child is restored to his mother.

Second Reading                                Colossians 3: 12-17

St. Paul teaches that, as Christians, we care for one another and have humility

Gospel                                                St. Luke 2:  33-35

The news that Jesus brings salvation is greeted with amazement and opposition, then as now; even those who love him most can be torn.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Loving God, as a mother feeds her children at the breast

you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life:

help us who have tasted your goodness

to grow in grace within the household of faith;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

                                         St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

                                        March 19thth 2017 – THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

                                         A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

As we need to quench our bodily thirst, so do we need to quench our spiritual thirst, our deep desire and need for God.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy

but first he suffered pain,

and entered not into glory before he was crucified:

mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,

may find it none other than the way of life and peace;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (pages 93/96)

Old Testament Reading                                                Exodus 17: 1-7

The Israelites were thirsty and rebellious, doubting God and Moses. But God answers doubts and provides for his people when they listen to his word.

New Testament Reading                                              Romans 5: 1-11

Like water onto a parched land, God’s Spirit has been poured into our hearts and Christ has shown his love for us by dying to set us free.

Gospel                                                                                 St. John 4: 5-42

Jesus offered the living water and the living bread to all people, even his enemies. And today, all are welcome at the fountain head of life.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations

of the world, the flesh and the devil,

and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

POETRY GROUP  ST ISSEY, PADSTOW and ST MERRYN

Do you enjoy poetry? We are a small group who meet in each other’s homes every 4 –6 weeks. The group has been going for many years and more recently was led by the late Phillip Mossman. A poet or subject is chosen and we each go away to research the poet and select poems we would like to share over afternoon tea. For many years the late Revd Barry Kinsmen delighted us with his spoken word and wonderful recitation of the poems of Charles Causley and John Betjeman. Jesus Christ brought new life and hope into the world, and called his disciples to receive it and to be his friends. Today pray we can worship and serve him personally.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth,

that they may return to the way of righteousness:

grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion,

that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession,

and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same;

through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
