Newsletter – 5 March 2017

“Weekly News” for the Parishes of Padstow,

                                         St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

                                        March 5thth 2017 – FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

                                 A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

We can often be tempted to pretend that we are greater or better than we really are. Through his temptations in the desert Jesus showed us how to rely upon God rather than giving in to such fantasies.

 THE COLLECT

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:  Give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS – Page 87/89

Old Testament Reading                                Genesis 2: 15-17, 3:1-7

The temptation to become like gods led to the fall of Adam and Eve.

New Testament Reading                               Romans 5: 12-19

We are rescued from our sin and made righteous by divine grace, brought to us by Jesus Christ as an abundant free gift.

Gospel                                                               St. Matthew 4: 1-11

Jesus resisted every temptation of Satan. Can we?

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven;

by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love

Teach us always to hunger for him, who is the true and living bread,

and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

We all give up things for Lent, so how about taking up the “Jars of Change Journey”   On display at the back of the church you will see a display raising awareness for WaterAid.  Please help give the gift of clean water by either making a donation or by filling a jar of change.  More information is available at the back of the church.  There will be a bucket for your donations in Padstow and Trevone every Sunday until Easter Sunday.  If you take up the “Jar of Change Journey” return your jar of change to either Sue Norfolk (Padstow) or Sue Hollingsworth (Trevone) on Easter Sunday.
