“Weekly News” for the Parishes of Padstow,
St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor
January 29th 2017 – FOURTH SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.
In this season of Epiphany we are invited to look at the ways in which Jesus reveals his Divine nature. Today we hear the account of his first miracle. In our worship we pray that, like his disciples, we may be strengthened in our faith in him.
God our creator, who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness: We pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief, shine into the hearts of all your people, and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
First Reading 1 Kings 17:8-16
The widow in Zarephath obeys Elijah’s commands and her basic needs for food and oil are met.
Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:18-end
The Paradoxes of Christianity are easily identified. Divine weakness triumphs over human strength and divine foolishness over human wisdom. The Cross is God’s unique road to victory.
Gospel St. John 2:1-11
Jesus graces a wedding with his presence. The occasion serves as an opportunity to demonstrate the effective working of his divine power.
Generous Lord, in word and Eucharist we have proclaimed the mystery of your love: Help us so to live out our days that we may be signs of your wonders in the world; through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Following PCC meetings at Padstow, St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor I am delighted to announce that Sue Norfolk of Padstow has been offered the post of Administrator and she has accepted the position. All three PCC’s were very happy to endorse the decision of the interview panel and we offer our thanks to the other two candidates who applied for the post.
I am very grateful for the financial support of all the PCC’s as having an administrator for the three parishes will make a tremendous difference to my workload. This is another step towards the new United Benefice so our plans are coming together well. Fr. Chris
THE NEW BENEFICE – UPDATE
The latest information we have on the proposed new benefice is that the papers are to be sent out to the three parishes in the next week for consultation. There will then be a period of 6 weeks to give anyone the opportunity to make representation to the diocese on any aspect of the consultation document. If there are no objections the papers will be sent to the Church Commissioners and then we shall legally be the “United Benefice of Padstow, St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor” after about a further 4 weeks. Fr. Chris
This month our TEATIME FAMILY SERVICE
will be held on Sunday January 29th at 4pm.
It will be a special service celebrating
CANDLEMAS (the presentation of baby Jesus to the Temple) and we will be lighting candles to remember all those who were Baptised in St Petroc’s in 2016.
All Parents, Godparents and little ones are invited to attend.
Refreshments will be served after the service.
HELP WANTED FOR COFFEE ROTA – Please sign up for the coffee rota which is on the noticeboard at the back of the church. It is great community outreach to be able to talk to each other and to our visitors after the service. It is not an arduous task!
PLEASE let’s not lose this important part of our church’s outreach.
Thank you from Sue & Linda.
BRASS CLEANING – Thank you to all those who have said that they will carry on cleaning the brasses for this year, it is very much appreciated. I am still looking for two volunteers to clean brasses in April and October. If you could spare an hour a week or if you know of anyone who would be willing to take this on please contact me.
Thank you. Sue Norfolk 01841 532902
