St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

February 26th 2017 – SUNDAY NEXT BEFORE LENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

INTRODUCTION

This is the last Sunday before Lent. As we prepare for a season of reflection and penitence, we focus on the fact that God gives us good things so that the memory and knowledge of them can sustain us through times of trial.

THE COLLECT

Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty

before he suffered death upon the cross:

give us grace to perceive his glory,

that we may be strengthened to suffer with him

and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

Old Testament                                                  Exodus 24:12-18

As Moses goes into a mountain to receive God’s law, a cloud hides him from sight. It showed the people that God is holy and commands obedience, and yet the man Moses could enter his presence.

 New Testament                                              2 Peter 1:16-21

Peter appeals to his personal experience of seeing Jesus transfigured, in order to remind his hearers that their faith is based on eyewitness experience and that they can trust the scriptures, confirmed by such experiences.

Gospel                                                                Matthew 17:1-9

Peter, James and John have their eyes opened to Jesus’ divine nature, and as a result learn a hard lesson about their own discipleship.

 POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

O holy God, we behold your glory in the face of Jesus Christ:

grant that we who are partakers at his table may reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may know his power to change and save;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

INTRODUCTION

The Mosaic Law gave us the 10 commandments. Jesus gives his explanation of how to live.  He gives us our “Rule of Life”

 THE COLLECT

Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity:  Give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                    Deuteronomy 30: 15 – end

God gives the way to live so that the Jewish people will be blessed by the Lord their God – the Way of life. The alternative is the way of death.

Second Reading                                1 Corinthians 3: 1-9

Paul rebukes party-spirit in the church; for it has only one foundation, Jesus Christ himself.

 Gospel                                                St. Matthew 5: 21 – 37

Jesus continues the “Sermon on the Mount”, teaching the inner meaning of the Ten Commandments

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Merciful Father, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life, that those who come to him should never hunger:

Draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

Message sent by Shirley Craft (Police, Community Messaging Officer, Devon & Cornwall)  TELEPHONE SCAM

Residents are asked to exercise caution when receiving calls purported to be from your or another Bank: Police received a report of a member of the public being phoned by a Bank to report £400 had been stolen from their account. The caller stated they would receive £400 on top of the recovered monies providing they first withdrew £2000 and purchased £2000 of iTUNE Gift Cards. The caller even told them to tell shop or bank staff “It’s presents for the grandchildren” They were told another person would call back requesting the serial numbers of the iTUNE cards and also to scratch off the foil on the rear to reveal a smaller number.  Both sets of numbers would then allow the caller to purchase goods to the value of £2000.  The phone number used was 01424758899, which is registered to Hastings in Sussex, both the callers were described as female and very polite and convincing. We would ask Recipients of Community Messaging to tell your more elderly and vulnerable neighbours about this message Report any similar incidents to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or online at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk            Thank you

Newsletter – 29 January 2017

“Weekly News” for the Parishes of Padstow,

St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

January 29th 2017 – FOURTH SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

 INTRODUCTION

In this season of Epiphany we are invited to look at the ways in which Jesus reveals his Divine nature. Today we hear the account of his first miracle. In our worship we pray that, like his disciples, we may be strengthened in our faith in him.

THE COLLECT

God our creator, who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness:  We pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief, shine into the hearts of all your people, and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading                                                      1 Kings 17:8-16

The widow in Zarephath obeys Elijah’s commands and her basic needs for food and oil are met.

Second Reading                                                1 Corinthians 1:18-end

The Paradoxes of Christianity are easily identified. Divine weakness triumphs over human strength and divine foolishness over human wisdom. The Cross is God’s unique road to victory.

Gospel                                                                  St. John 2:1-11

Jesus graces a wedding with his presence. The occasion serves as an opportunity to demonstrate the effective working of his divine power.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Generous Lord, in word and Eucharist we have proclaimed the mystery of your love:  Help us so to live out our days that we may be signs of your wonders in the world; through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen

BENEFICE ADMINISTRATOR

Following PCC meetings at Padstow, St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor I am delighted to announce that Sue Norfolk of Padstow has been offered the post of Administrator and she has accepted the position. I am very grateful for the financial support of all the PCC’s as having an administrator for the three parishes will make a tremendous difference to my workload.  This is another step towards the new United Benefice so our plans are coming together well.  Fr. Chris

 THE NEW BENEFICE – UPDATE

The latest information we have on the proposed new benefice is that the papers are to be sent out to the three parishes in the next week for consultation.  There will then be a period of 6 weeks to give anyone the opportunity to make representation to the diocese on any aspect of the consultation document.  If there are no objections the papers will be sent to the Church Commissioners and then we shall legally be the “United Benefice of Padstow, St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor” after about a further 4 weeks.    Fr. Chris

This month our TEATIME FAMILY SERVICE

will be held on Sunday January 29th at 4pm.

It will be a special service celebrating

CANDLEMAS (the presentation of baby Jesus to the Temple) and we will be lighting candles to remember all those who were Baptised in St Petroc’s in 2016.

All Parents, Godparents and little ones are invited to attend.

Refreshments will be served after the service.

HELP WANTED FOR COFFEE ROTA – Please sign up for the coffee rota which is on the noticeboard at the back of the church.  It is great community outreach to be able to talk to each other and to our visitors after the service.  It is not an arduous task!

PLEASE let’s not lose this important part of our church’s outreach.

Thank you from Sue & Linda.

BRASS CLEANING –  Thank you to all those who have said that they will carry on cleaning the brasses for this year, it is very much appreciated.  I am still looking for two volunteers to clean brasses in April and October.  If you could spare an hour a week or if you know of anyone who would be willing to take this on please contact me.

Thank you.  Sue Norfolk 01841 532902
