Newsletter – 4 December 2016

“Weekly News” for the Parishes of Padstow,

                                         St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

                                         December 4th 2016 – SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

                                            A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

Jesus was the son of David and the Son of God, King of kings and Lord of lords. In him, we can see the hope for the whole world.

O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us,

and with great might succour us;

that whereas, through our sins and wickedness

we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us,

your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

be honour and glory, now and for ever.  Amen

First Reading                                                      Isaiah 11:1 10

The ideal Davidic King will rule with justice and wisdom, peace and harmony, holiness and glory.

 Second Reading                                              Romans 15: 4 13

Jesus Christ welcomes us into knowing God the Father, the God of truth, hope and faithful encouragement, so that we might live in his Kingdom by faith and with joy.

Gospel                                                             St. Matthew 3. 1 12

John the Baptist spoke about the coming King, and the need to repent. One more powerful than himself, the One is coming to bring mercy, grace, life and peace.

Father in heaven, who sent your Son to redeem the world

and will send him again to be our judge:

give us grace so to imitate him in the humility and purity of his first coming

that, when he comes again,

we may be ready to greet him with joyful love and firm faith;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Advent Candle Ceremony

Second Candle – The Candle of Peace – The prophets who foretold the birth of Jesus.

 ADVENT 2 (the first candle is re lit)

All:  We have this Advent Ring to remind us of the Coming of Jesus, the Light of the World.

SING:                                    The holly and the ivy,

                                                Are dancing in a ring,

                                                Round the coloured Advent candles

                                                And the shining Christmas King.

Said together:  (as the second candle is lit)

We light this candle to help us think of God’s greatest promise, first told by the prophets.

 SING:                                   O, two is for the prophets

                                                and for the light they bring.

                                                They are candles in the darkness,

                                                All alight for Christ the King.

 Psalm 72: 1-7

1 Give the king your judgements, O God, ¨ and your righteousness to the son of a king.

2 Then shall he judge your people righteously ¨ and your poor with justice.

3 May the mountains bring forth peace, ¨ and the little hills righteousness for the people.

4 May he defend the poor among the people, ¨ deliver the children of the needy and crush the oppressor.

5 May he live as long as the sun and moon endure, ¨ from one generation to another.

6 May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, ¨ like the showers that water the earth.

7 In his time shall righteousness flourish, ¨ and abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more.

Everyone is invited to St. Merryn Church on Sunday, December 11th at 3.00 p.m. for a Service of Advent carols and readings.  The service is hosted by South Camel Christians Together and the collection will be for S.C.C.T. Funds.

We offer our thanks to St. Merryn for hosting this event.

Sally Lee (Chair)

Everyone is invited to an Open meeting on Sunday, December 11th at 12 noon in the Church Rooms.

We have now completed the first six months of the new pattern of worship at St. Petroc’s and St. Saviour’s and I promised that we would have a get together at the end of that period to gauge how things are going with the non-Eucharistic services of BCP Morning Prayer and “Service of the Word”.

We would really value your opinions on how YOU think they are going so please come along and have your say. Coffee will be served at the start of the meeting.

May I say a tremendous thank you to our worship leaders for all that they are doing with the new services and also with the “Teatime” family services.
