“Weekly News” for the Parishes of Padstow,

St. Merryn and St. Issey with St. Petroc Minor

November 27th 2016 – FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today.

On this Advent Sunday, we rejoice in God’s promise of salvation.  As we look for his coming in glory, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 3 & 4 – Year “A” Readings)

First Reading                                      Isaiah 2: 1-5

God promises a time of justice and peace for all the nations, when they will follow his teaching; Isaiah urges his own nation to walk in that light now.

Second Reading                                Romans 13: 11-14

Believing in Christ, we are nearer to salvation and can arm ourselves with his light to chase away the darkness of self centred behaviour.

Gospel                                                  St. Matthew 24: 36-44

We do not know when the fullness of salvation will dawn, so Jesus urges us to live our whole lives in readiness for his coming.

O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear,

he may not find us sleeping in sin

but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Advent Candle Ceremony

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT – The Candle of Christian Hope

All:  We have this Advent Ring to remind us of the Coming of Jesus, the Light of

the World.

ALL SING:                            The holly and the ivy,

                                                Are dancing in a ring,

                                                Round the coloured Advent candles

                                                And the shining Christmas King.

Said together: (as first candle is lit)

All:  We light this candle to remind us of God’s people who in every age watch for His Coming.

ALL SING:                          And one is for God’s people

                                                In every age and day.

We are watching for His coming,

                                                We believe and we obey.

 Psalm 122

1 I was glad when they said to me, ¨ ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’

2 And now our feet are standing ¨ within your gates, O Jerusalem;

3 Jerusalem, built as a city ¨ that is at unity in itself.

4 Thither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, ¨ as is decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

5 For there are set the thrones of judgement, ¨ the thrones of the house of David.

6 O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ¨ ‘May they prosper who love you.

7 ‘Peace be within your walls ¨ and tranquillity within your palaces.’

8 For my kindred and companions’ sake, ¨ I will pray that peace be with you.

9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, ¨ I will seek to do you good.

Everyone is invited to St. Merryn Church on Sunday, December 11th at 3.00 p.m. for a Service of Advent carols and readings.  The service is hosted by South Camel Christians Together and the collection will be for S.C.C.T. Funds.

We offer our thanks to St. Merryn for hosting this event.

Sally Lee (Chair)

For the seven months October 2016 through to April 2017 parking is severely restricted as the contractors are using half the car park nearest to the church for their compound

PLEASE can you help us by only using this car park as a last resort as the limited spaces we have are needed for Church Rooms users and for those visiting the church.

Please do not block the access for the contractors as they will be receiving regular deliveries of materials, and we cannot be responsible for any damage to vehicles on the car park.

Everyone is invited to an Open meeting on Sunday, December 11th at 12 noon in the Church Rooms.

We have now completed the first six months of the new pattern of worship at St. Petroc’s and St. Saviour’s and I promised that we would have a get together at the end of that period to gauge how things are going with the non-Eucharistic services of BCP Morning Prayer and “Service of the Word”.

We would really value your opinions on how YOU think they are going so please come along and have your say. Coffee will be served at the start of the meeting.

May I say a tremendous thank you to our worship leaders for all that they are doing with the new services and also with the “Teatime” family services.
