OUR INTENTION TODAY
Jesus told an unusual story with a surprise ending about an incompetent and dishonest manager. In our worship today let us offer him those hidden traits of which we are ashamed and ask him to redeem them for us.
Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you: Pour your love into our hearts and draw us to yourself, and so bring us at last to your heavenly city where we shall see you face to face; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
READINGS FOR TODAY (Lectionary) Page 1042/43
First Reading Amos 8:4-7
Those who trample on the needy, bring to ruin the poor of the land or practise deceit, cause God to weep.
Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-7
God’s people are urged to pray regularly for those in positions of power and authority, so that all may lead a good and peaceful life.
Third Reading St. Luke 16:1-13
Jesus commends a dishonest manager not for his dishonesty but for acting shrewdly, because the manager was prepared to risk everything to save himself.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Psalm 113 (Padstow)
1 Give praise, you servants of the Lord, ¨ O praise the name of the Lord.
2 Blessed be the name of the Lord, ¨ from this time forth and for evermore.
3 From the rising of the sun to its setting ¨ let the name of the Lord be praised.
4 The Lord is high above all nations ¨ and his glory above the heavens.
5 Who is like the Lord our God, that has his throne so high, ¨ yet humbles himself to behold the things of heaven and earth?
6 He raises the poor from the dust ¨ and lifts the needy from the ashes,
7 To set them with princes, ¨ with the princes of his people.
8 He gives the barren woman a place in the house ¨ and makes her a joyful mother of children.
