The Parish of Padstow
(St. Petroc’s, Padstow & St. Saviour’s, Trevone)
9th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY-PROPER 12- Sunday 24th July

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today

INTRODUCTION
Abraham pleaded with God for the lives of just people who did not deserve vengeance, hardly daring to do so. God granted his request because he listens to the desires of our hearts. Jesus urges us to ask with confidence, knowing God loves us.

THE COLLECT
Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your Church: Open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE READINGS ( Page 998/1000)
First Reading Genesis 18:20-23
God can be challenged to account for himself, even by us. God wants a thorough-going relationship with us in which demands can be made on both sides.

Second Reading Colossians 2:6-15
Christ is the basis of our life. He alone knows us, forgives us and heals us. We need no exterior signs, just the deeply held belief that he is our all in all.

Gospel St. Luke 11:1-13
If friends respond to our cry for help, how much more so will our heavenly Father come to our aid and the Lord’s Prayer perfectly expresses all our needs.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Holy Father, who gathered us here around the table of your Son to share this meal with the whole household of God: In that new world where you reveal the fullness of your peace, gather people of every race and language to share in the eternal banquet of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Psalm 138 (Trevone only)
1 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; ¨ before the gods will I sing praise to you.
2 I will bow down towards your holy temple and praise your name, because of your love and faithfulness; ¨ for you have glorified your name and your word above all things.
3 In the day that I called to you, you answered me; ¨ you put new strength in my soul.
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, ¨ for they have heard the words of your mouth.
5 They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, ¨ that great is the glory of the Lord.
6 Though the Lord be high, he watches over the lowly; ¨ as for the proud, he regards them from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you will preserve me; ¨ you will stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; your right hand will save me.
8 The Lord shall make good his purpose for me; ¨ your loving-kindness, O Lord, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands.

8th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY-PROPER 11- Sunday 17th July

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today

INTRODUCTION
As we welcome friends and neighbours into our homes, so we welcome Christ into our worship. May the gift of hospitality and love be present in our church, in our homes and in our hearts today.

THE COLLECT
Almighty Lord and everlasting God, we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments; that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

THE READINGS (Page 992/994)
First Reading Genesis 18:1-10a
Angels visit Abraham to tell him that Sarah will have a child, and that Sodom and Gomorrah will be destroyed. He shows them traditional hospitality, realising they are messengers from God.

Second Reading Colossians 1:15-28
Paul reminds his converts of the divinity of Christ and of the wonder of the Incarnation. In Christ the fullness of God is displayed. He is the head of the Church.

Gospel St. Luke 10:38-42
Jesus is welcomed in the house of his friends, and speaks about the priorities in Christian life.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that have taken holy things; may the ears which have heard your word be deaf to clamour and dispute; may the tongues which have sung your praise be free from deceit; may the eyes which have seen the tokens of your love shine with the light of hope; and may the bodies which have been fed with your body be refreshed with the fullness of your life; glory to
you forever. Amen.
Psalm 15 (Padstow only)
1 Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? ¨ Who may rest upon your holy hill?
2 Whoever leads an uncorrupt life ¨ and does the thing that is right;
3 Who speaks the truth from the heart ¨ and bears no deceit on the tongue;
4 Who does no evil to a friend ¨ and pours no scorn on a neighbour;
5 In whose sight the wicked are not esteemed, ¨ but who honours those who fear the Lord.
6 Whoever has sworn to a neighbour ¨ and never goes back on that word;
7 Who does not lend money in hope of gain, ¨ nor takes a bribe against the innocent;
8 Whoever does these things ¨ shall never fall.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son; and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning , is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today

INTRODUCTION
We celebrate this holy Eucharist as neighbours together in Christ. We affirm our fellowship with each other, and bring to God the needs of our neighbours.

THE COLLECT
Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen

READINGS (Lectionary Page 987/988)
First Reading Deuteronomy 30:9-14
Moses promises prosperity to the people of Israel if they obey the commandments of God enshrined in the Law and written on their hearts.

Second Reading: Colossians 1:1-14
Paul greets the Christians in Colossae in the opening words of his letter, and rejoices with them in their allegiance to Christ.

Gospel: St. Luke 10:25-37
Jesus responds to the challenge of the lawyer by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. He broadens the concept of neighbour from a narrow legalistic interpretation to include everyone, everywhere, in whatever circumstances.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER
Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life, ever giving himself that the world may live: May we so receive within ourselves the power of his death and passion that, in his saving cup, we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love; for he is alive and reigns, now and forever. Amen

Jane Saunders – 1946-2016
Dear Jane, a member of our congregation at St. Saviour’s Trevone died peacefully on Tuesday 28th June at her home in Trevone. We offer our love, sympathy and prayers to Martin and his family as this very sad and dark time in their lives.
Jane was greatly loved by all who knew her and we give thanks to God for her wonderful sense of humour and her great love or her family.
In her church life we give thanks for her membership of the Parochial Church Council and for her wise counsel; for all she has done in the parish and especially for introducing coffee after the service on the third Sunday of the month at St. Saviour’s.
Jane’s funeral will take place at St. John the Baptist church, Aldenham, Watford, Hertfordshire on Friday 15th July 2016 at 2.30 p.m. as Martin and Jane worshipped there for 35 years so it is a place close to both their hearts. She will be laid to her rest in St. John’s churchyard. I will be in St. Saviour’s Church from 2.30 p.m. – 3.00 p.m. on Friday to quietly remember Jane and her family as they go through the service at Aldenham. If anyone would like to join me for 30 minutes of silent prayer you are, of course, more than welcome.
There will be a Memorial service for Jane in St. Saviour’s, Trevone on Friday 29th July at 2.30 p.m. followed by refreshments at the Well Parc Hotel, Trevone.
May Jane rest in peace and rise in glory.
Fr. Chris

THANK YOU – Can I say a massive thank you for what was a truly incredible evening at the Cathedral for my Ordination. The support that I received at the Cathedral was just incredible and I know there were many more praying from afar. Many friends travelled a long way for the service and I was so thankful, it was truly moving and emotional, to see pockets of friends and family around the Cathedral. I’m sorry if I didn’t get to speak to you for very long or at all!! But please know that your presence and support meant the absolute world to me, and I feel truly blessed to have you all in my life. I couldn’t have done it without you all. Thank you.
Much love and prayers. Kirsten
