PALM SUNDAY – THE START OF HOLY WEEK

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today

 Introduction

Christ comes into our own lives today, in humility. Like the crowds on the first Palm Sunday, we greet him with joy. We pray for his presence among us as we share in the events of his Passion during this Holy Week.

THE COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God, who in your tender love towards the human race sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross:  grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

First Reading (page 838)                                                                         Isaiah 50.4-9 The prophet writes of the suffering servant, who accepts pain and degradation,  in the knowledge that God is his helper, who stands with him against his adversaries.

Gospel (page 840) (Feel free to sit – very long reading)           St. Luke 22.14-23.56

The Passion narrative begins at the Last Supper, and takes us through the failures of Jesus’ friends, followed by injustice, cruelty, abuse of power, suffering and death. Through all this we see the dignity of our Lord and at the end, his burial and the preparations being made by those who love him, which are to come to their fruition on what we know to be Easter Day.

 POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you humbled yourself in taking the form of a servant, and in obedience died on the cross for our salvation: give us the mind to follow you and to proclaim you as Lord and King, to the glory of God the Father.  Amen
