St. Petroc’s Padstow and St Saviour’s Trevone
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
“The Weekly News” – February 21st 2016
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today

INTRODUCTION AND CALL TO WORSHIP
By God’s presence and power, we have been made citizens of God’s heavenly Kingdom. Let us worship the living God, whose life amongst us moves us to hear and heed his words, and draws us closer to home in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

THE COLLECT
Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth, that they may return to the way of righteousness: grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 820-822)
First Reading Genesis 15. 1-12, 17-18
The prophetic call to Abram is to his descendants and to their future homeland.

Second Reading Philippians 3: 17 – 4.1
We are to know ourselves as citizens not of earthly political kingdoms, but of the heavenly kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel St. Luke 13. 31-35
Jesus Christ, Prophet and King, is present to us as the wings of a mother hen are home for her brood.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER
Almighty God, you see that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Would you like to serve on the PCC?
Elected members of the PCC serve for three years and then cannot be re-elected for one year so that it gives as many as possible the chance to serve on the PCC. This year Janet Dawe, Peter Crawford and Lilian Martyn (Padstow) and Jane Saunders (Trevone) all retire and we thank them for their devoted service to the PCC for the past three years. There has also been a vacancy for Trevone this year so we have 3 vacancies for Padstow and 2 for Trevone.
There are application forms at the back for both churches for you to complete if you would like your name to go forward for election at the Annual Meeting. Please hand your completed forms to either Fr. Chris of your churchwardens.
Thanks again to all who have served on the PCC this year.

St. Petroc’s Padstow and St Saviour’s Trevone
SUNDAY BEFORE LENT
“The Weekly News” – February 14th 2016

A warm welcome to visitors who join us today
INTRODUCTION AND CALL TO WORSHIP In Lent we renew our desire to fulfil God’s purposes. Let us turn to God in prayer and repent of the same human pride which crucified our Lord.

THE COLLECT Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: Give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
TODAY’S READINGS (Page 816/819)
First Reading Deuteronomy 26.1-11
The ancient Israelites regularly reminded themselves of the relationship between themselves and a loving, generous God, who had chosen to make himself known to them. A recital of his past saving acts acknowledged that they were constantly in his debt and must give him praise and honour.

Second Reading Romans 10.8b-13
St Paul stresses the continuity of the new revelation of God in Christ with the covenant described in the Old Testament. Yet salvation has now become available to all who confess their faith in the God who gives life and overcomes death.

Gospel St. Luke 4.1-13
The human Jesus had to resist the chance to see himself as more powerful than God: in the desert places of the Christian year, especially Lent, we must also learn to resist, recognising the true nature of temptation.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER
Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven; by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love: Teach us always to hunger for him who is the true and living bread, and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

St. Petroc’s Padstow and St Saviour’s Trevone
SUNDAY BEFORE LENT
“The Weekly News” – February 7th 2016
A warm welcome to visitors who join us today

Introduction and call to worship
As Jesus prayed, the disciples saw his face shine with the glory of the Lord. In our worship today, may we see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

THE COLLECT
Almighty Father,
whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross:
give us grace to perceive his glory,
that we may be strengthened to suffer with him
and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 807/809)
First Reading Exodus 34:29-35
Interceding with God for his rebellious people, and receiving the covenant commandments, Moses’ face radiated God’s glory, which frightened the Israelites so he wore a veil.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2
The new covenant in Christ allows us unveiled access to God, whose Spirit enables us increasingly to reflect his glory as we turn to him in confidence.

Gospel St. Luke 9:28-36
Like Moses, Jesus radiates the glory of God, but he is the Son, outshining both Moses and Elijah, as the new covenant eclipses the Law and the Prophets.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER
O holy God,
we behold your glory in the face of Jesus Christ:
Grant that we who are partakers at his table
may reflect his life in word and deed,
that all the world may know his power to change and save;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

St. Petroc’s Padstow and St. Saviour’s Trevone
CANDLEMASS SUNDAY
(The Presentation of Christ in the Temple)
“The Weekly News” – JANUARY 31st 2016

Introduction and call to worship
Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. As they
brought Jesus to be dedicated for service, let us offer ourselves to God’s service.

THE COLLECT
Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple,
in substance of our flesh:
Grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS (Page 788/789)
Old Testament Reading Malachi 3: 1-5
Prophesying Christ, Malachi speaks of his coming among them to refine and to purify; and to prepare Israel for judgement.

Second Reading Hebrews 2: 14-18
Jesus, came from God and became man, so that in suffering, in temptation, in dying and in rising, he might atone for our sins and free us to follow him into glory.

Gospel St.Luke 2: 22-40
Mary and Joseph consecrate Jesus to the Lord. Simeon looks upon the child and beholds the salvation of Israel; one destined to bring about the falling and rising of many, and a light also for the Gentiles; that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Anna too, who devoted her life to prayer, recognises Jesus as the Messiah.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER
Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna, who lived to welcome the Messiah:
may we, who have received these gifts beyond words, prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he comes to bring us to eternal life; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen
